Chiranjeevi launches Political Party: Prajarajyam

Tirupati: As on the silverscreen, Telugu matinee idol Chiranjeevi gave a blockbuster performance at the temple town of Tirupati on Tuesday, where he announced the launch of his political party Prajarajyam, which translates to 'people's party'.

The venue of the 'mega party' launch turned into a political mecca as hundreds of thousands of Chiranjeevi's fans and supporters from all over Andhra Pradesh thronged the temple town days in advance to hear the filmstar-turned-politician revealing the name and agenda of his party.

Excited over their matinee idol's political debut, fans of Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi went out of control at the site of the public meeting in the temple town leading police to lathicharge on them.

Repeated appeals by Chiranjeevi's brother and actor Nagendra Babu to maintain calm during the public meeting went unheeded among the jubilant fans. Police resorted to lathicharge to control the crowd.

Here are some of the excerpts from his speech:

• I will always remain your servant. It is a historic moment. A proud moment for Andhra.
• I founded hundreds of blood and eye banks.
• Let's concentrate on positive things and fight divisive forces.
• God has blessed me. Asked me to do this. I seek your support.

I don't know politics. I can't understand it. But I know the suffering of people.

• I have done all roles in cinema. I have seen the entire world. I don't want anything more.
• I had just two pairs of trousers in my college.
• I survived in Madras with less than Rs 100 per month. People need a person from such background to lead them. My roles in cinema always represented weaker sections.
• I am from a very humble background. We had just 5 acres of land. My father was a police constable.
• This sound will reverberate across Andhra.
• I know the pulse beat of the Telugu people. I promise a clean and effective movement.
• Youth power is my power. Women will get more attention.
• This sound will reverberate across Andhra.
• I represent weaker sections. Today's meeting is a historic meeting.

Chiranjeevi announces political entry - August 17, 2008

Hyderabad, Aug 17: Ending a year-long speculation, Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi on Sunday announced his entry into politics and said pro-poor policies and social justice will be his party's main agenda.
The name, party flag and agenda of the new party will be unveiled at the first public meeting to be held at the temple town of Tirupati on August 26.
Addressing a crowded press conference at his party office in posh Jubilee Hills here, the 53-year-old actor said he had decided to enter politics to ameliorate the sufferings of the poor and bring about transformation in society.
Keeping his options open on future alliances, Chiranjeevi said the question of electoral tie-ups would be considered at a later stage.
While asserting that there was a political vacuum in the state, he, however, said he has no rivals.
"Poverty and backwardness are my enemies. I will fight against them," he said.
The popular hero said former President A P J Abdul Kalam had inspired him to take the political plunge.
"I would have committed a historical blunder had I not entered politics," Chiranjeevi said.
On issues like Telangana statehood demand and naxalism, he parried the questions and said his party would take a collective decision after thorough debate and objective analysis of the problems.
